I'm thinking of using a Celeron 2.4 box with 512mb ram for Linux.

In the past when playing around with Linux (Knoppix & others), it would not recognise my Asus motherboard sound card, just wondering if I'd have more luck with a Gigabyte motherboard.

I don't have a great deal of knowledge re Linux which is why I'd like to dedicate it to a computer of its own.

Thanks.

It would probably be simple to get your soundcard working if you knew the chipset it used ( 'lspci' might tell you ), figure out what driver it needs, modprobe for the driver ( assuming your precompiled kernel has it built as a module already ) and everything should be working.

Knoppix may not have support for them if its a rare or new card ( Knoppix 3.9 came out in the last couple of days incidentally ), but pretty much any installable and modern distribution should work with all hardware.. there are very few exceptions. Ive used motherboards with via, intel, amd and nvidia chipsets, its not really difficult to get everything working on pc motherboards these days.. laptops may still be a bit tricky however.
