Hi All,

Am going to be walking into the world of linux by formatting my harddisk and installing fedora. Wish me luck. Will keep you posted with how i go, and/or questions i may have within this thread... (likely will find answers elsewhere, and will re-read the stickied thread).

Goodbye windoze!!!!

Why don't you dual boot for a while, just until you're comfortable with it.

Hi Simon, thanks for the suggestion. I think i will let a little sanity enter in and i will dual boot Fedora....

As far as my progress, i had downloaded the iso's about a week or two ago. I burnt them onto a CD today, and started them up. I had the option for confirming the CD's were correct, and i had a problem with CD 2... so now i am waiting for a loooong time to download a new file. This probably will not happen this weekend :(

Why download when for about $10 you can buy the 4 discs on E/bay. I have bought a number of distros from Creative inspirations (E/bay au shop) and am more than happy with the results in fact am using Fedora core 3 now :)

Well, i downloaded, and i had the same result with disk two and three of the four. Checking the checksums, they had all downloaded correctly.

I decided to bite the bullet, and i installed it using these disks, and it went through fine.

I had a little bit of time playing with it on Saturday. Unfortunately, My family took me to the hospital on Sunday and i only just got out. (Hey, it was only my legs not working... i still had a little movement in my arms... why send me away?) Anyway, i am walking again, and will soon get back to exploring Fedora.

Dragged away from your shiny new Linux system just as you got it installed? Wow thats brutal, I hope you at least made a valiant effort in fighting off your would-be captors before you were subdued.

If you are ever in the quandrary of needing some of your windows apps back and are thinking about wiping Linux, remember that you could dual boot, run it with VMware or similar emulation systems, or boot to a linux desktop from a LiveCD or USB key-drive with no harddrive install needed. The possibilities are nearly limitless.

If you are looking for a place to buy linux cds, Everything Linux sells a lot of linux ( and *BSD ) related stuff, systems, shirts, cds and the like:

http://www.elx.com.au/

Anyways, good luck with it all :)

Heh, thanks :) I have learnt that it is called Familial Hypokaelemic Periodic Paralysis... and it will affect me if i have too much carbs... so no more whole Pizza and 2L Coke for me. (That is what i ate the night before)

I have resisted asking here for assisstance, and have been doggedly searching the internet for my answers. Some i have found, some i am still looking for (But i will refuse to ask here).

First thing i got into was the games... Free Civ and Maelstrom and Atlantix.

Then I managed to install the plugin to the browser for Java 1.5 (That was a fun learning experience... getting to use "ls -l", "su" and some other commands, that i have now forgotten... but i will get to use again....

Why do i get to use again? Because deleted the partition, and reinstalled Fedora again... Just to see some of the other options. So i can attempt to reinstall the plugin.

I am impressed with the GUI... There are a couple of things that annoy me.. but i am sure i will find out how to change them... (or live with them)

BTW, I did end up dual booting. So XP is still available to me... but when i do settle down into Fedora, and get things working the way i want, i will slowly stop using XP.

Hey as an old polio I can understand your reluctance to leave while at least some bits were still working :D I started using linux about a year ago and it has been a very steep learning curve but a very rewarding one. I currently run between 3 and 5 apps on my desktop as I like to play with all the latest distros(currently Yoper, Mepis, fedora core3 and Ubuntu) . The forums that all distros have are a great source of knowledge but be careful to do a search on your question first as its unlikly that you're the first person to to have that prob :o anyway have fun
