Network Manager (http://people.redhat.com/dcbw/NetworkManager/index.html) is a nifty tool for managing wired and unwired network connections and shows how far Linux has come in recent times. I just tried it on my laptop and it seems to work well though the intel driver is still in development and doesn't report the link state properly.
See the bottom of this page for a bit of a write up.

Agree with ya ... a top little tool. :)
It is early days for NM but it's bound to be picked up and brought upto speed quickly. Wireless is a bit of a dogs breakfast at present as most vendors use proprietary crap. :-/ Lets hope it will stablise shortly and a good core base for Linux comes out... similar to the work Alan Cox did for general Ethernet Wired NICs... :D

Just a quick update.
The latest intel driver and version of NetworkManager has seen a vast improvement. After putting in my wireless password when prompted I can now freely swap between wired and wireless without any intervention needed.
Bill's page has changed.
