I would suggest putting the modem into bridge mode and using IPCOP to be your DHCP server, gateway and proxy server as well as a firewall. You will need a spare older PC for it though, but it is a good little project. The older PC when setup with IPCOP can run headless, ie no keyboard, mouse or monitor.

is ipcop a service??? or a standalone distro? No, IPCOP is a Linux distro that is specifically for firewall purposes. You actually use 2 NICs, 1 (RED) which the modem connects to and the other (GREEN), to connect to a switch for your local network. You can alos put in a 3rd NIC for a separate zone for public servers (like a webserver or mail server, etc). Basically, most people get by with only 2 zones (2 NICs) though.
When IPCOP installs, it completely takes over the computer it is installed on with the hard disk being re-partitioned and formatted.

Others I would recommend is Astaro Security Linux (http://www.astaro.com/).... excellent web-based German Firewall/Gateway (based on Linux). It's free for home use. (You register for a hobbist license).
ClarkConnect Home Edition (http://www.clarkconnect.org/projects/home.php)is also another popular Firewall and based around RH... (so similar to what you currently are using.

Might I suggest something like SME server, or clark connect. Setting up dhcpd IPtables, etc from scratch might be a bit difficult for an initial setup(lots of config files to edit, and need to learn the structure of a table, and chains). If you are still interested in it, Im sure someone else here knows of a how-to and will provide a link :)
Or, if you want to use the redhat base, try out Mandrake Multi-network firewall, I have used it in the past, and it is quiet good to use.
It means it has the easy to use, web interface for the firewall/NAT, etc yet will still let you install any additional programs you need to, like MySQL, etc.

Krayzie... wrong thread...
You need to look at setting up /etc/hosts (with localhost and crazy).
Then look at /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/nsswitch.conf
should i have in /etc/hosts
172.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.6 krayzie
e-o-f
?
wat do i do if i dont have an actual dns name??
cos i just wanna run it thru my ip for now
172.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.6 krayzie
This should be ok for your hosts file, although localhost is wrong (I'm sure thats just a typo). it should be 127.0.0.1
This will work fine in a no dns environment. DHCP of itself is not difficult to set up and the standard online RH manuals do a pretty good job of explaining it. However I would suspect you'll need a primer on DHCP and networking in general.
I'm also an ex MNF user and thought it was fantastic. It takes a little work but I still think its the best total Firewall solution for linux out there (Ignoring some of the more dedicated LRP based systems running zebra).
Here is a good general primer on networking concepts for linux:Linux Home Networking (http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/#Linux)
HTH :)
