Well, earlier this year, I attempted to run my own Linux web server, but was having bizzare drop out issues. I've always suspected the modem (was only running in half-bridge mode), so have decided to give it another try.
I'm running Mandrake 9.2 and so far have set it up as a router/firewall (the firewall is kind of redundant as the modem is bullet proof-ish) and full Web/SQL/File server.
I have only just setup Squid, and am about to configure the banner-ad blocking componenet of Squid. All I can say is, Linux is much easier to administer than Windows. Sure, you need to do everything yourself (I'm trying not to use Webmin), and need to know the commands, but you don't need to restart, don't have BSoD's.
Pretty soon, once I know the Linux box is running OK, I'll try setting the modem up in full-bridged mode and have the Linux handle the authentication. Hopefully it all works. Just need to figure out how to setup the modem in bridged mode. (No, it's not just as simple as setting "Bridge" to 'Enabled', ditto with DMZ, Virtual Host etc. Tried all that. )
Cheers
EDIT:- Oh My GOD!!!!! Squid with Banner-ad zapping is SOOOOOOOOOOO COOOL!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D
