hey, does anyone know if it's possible...?
Work uses M$, I want to be able to connect to the VPN from home, preferably without having to run windows. I've tried Googling and can't find anything of use - from what I've read an M$ VPN is different to a normal vpn. Am I right?
The basics: I'm running Gentoo, use kernel 2.4.23 (patched for wireless) normally, plus dual-boot to 2.4.20 in console mode. I'm behind a Netgear wireless router connected to an ADSL modem.
Thanks
Peter
I'm don't know, but there seems to be some info about that in the Linux VPN Masquerade HOWTO:

Thanks, had a brief look at the howto but it looks like it's for setting up a VPN server - the parts that deal with windows are only the client (rather than a windows server with a linux client)

I have tried this before, a lot of the information the net about MS VPN's it well well out of date.
AS i am aware MS uses either L2TP or PPTP and linux will connect quite easily to PPTP, but unsure as to L2TP. In fact many linux distros comes with a PPTP client as an instalable package. I use debian and the problems i ran into were with the version of pppd, inthat i needed to upgrade..
BUt i managed with no problems eventually to run a linux pptp server with linux and windows pptp clients.
i now run a windows 2000 server and can connect to it in the clear using pptp from linux clients also.
The next problem was encryption.. now that i didnt get working..

I'm working on some docs for our VPN at work - M$ based for the mo. They aren't for general publishing yet, but they work for me, at least roughly.
You could give it a shot. Please let me know if you do, and if it works.
See here (http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~simonb/vpn/)
I guess the moral is that pptpclient.sourceforge.net is a good place.
[Edit: M$ based in the protocol, that is. The server is still running linux pptpd]

been a while; simple answer is it looks like pptp will do the job
long answer is i've gotta find the time to recompile the kernel with ppp support (there's me thinking i've switched to adsl and don't need to compile it in... grrr...)
and thanx for those instructions simonb
