It's usually the NAT stuffing things up.

You're using a NAT router/firewall, right?

Transferring files in MSN and ICQ initiates a peer-to-peer connection between you and your friend. This means your friend needs to be able to connect directly to some port on your machine.

The problem is usually one of two:

1. Your friend is connecting to your correct IP address, but it's actually your router. And your router doesn't know what to do with these packets coming in on some strange port, so simply throws them away. You need to forward these ports to your local machine.

2. The software doesn't detect your own IP address correctly. For example it might only detect your local internal 192.168.x.x address, instead of your real-world internet IP address. So your software then reports the wrong address to your friend, and when he tries to connect to you, it fails.

I've had very limited success with opening up (forwarding) certain ports. In most cases it still doesn't work for me.

With MSN, everything will supposedly work fine if your router supports uPnP. Maybe see if you can turn that on.

So, maybe give us a bit more information on your actual lan setup...

Cheers,
-V

Hehe....

Unfortunately I've never used the NB1300.

Maybe someone else can comment on how to forward ports and whether or not it supports uPnP.

Try forwarding the following ports to your local PC behind the NAT.

MSN:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For file transfer

Both incoming and outgoing TCP connections use this range of ports: 6891 to 6900. This allows up to 10 simultaneous file transfers per sender. If you open only Port 6891, users will be able to do only one file transfer at a time.

The TCP ports need to be configured so that sockets on a port remain open for extended periods of time.

Note:

File transfer may not work if you are behind a network address translation (NAT) device.

ICQ:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For ICQ to successfully work behind a firewall the following system configurations must be set by the System Administrator for the systems network.

Client to server Communication:

• This is done via port 5190 TCP to login.icq.com (please note- allow a bi-directional connection to the port for login.icq.com and not any specific IP address, since it stands for more than one IP address).

Client to client communication:

• Client to client connection is done using the TCP protocol, using port range 1024-65535. This means that the client needs an open listening port within the mentioned range-- 1024-65535.

MSN

so what i need to do is open the 192.168.1.1 then go to the prot forwarding section right ??

what is public port and private port ??

and which ip address do i need to input the WAN or LAN ??

also to open up all the 10 port i need to do it one by one right ??

ICQ

it works but it just uploads file at a speed of max 4kbp/s usually 2 kpb/s slower than my 56 k modem LOL

"so what i need to do is open the 192.168.1.1 then go to the prot forwarding section right ??"

Yes.

"what is public port and private port ??"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
ID....Public Port....Private Port....Port Type....Host IP Address
1........6891...............6891...........TCP.... ....192.168.0.xxx
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"and which ip address do i need to input the WAN or LAN ??"

No need to change any WAN/LAN IPs.

"also to open up all the 10 port i need to do it one by one right ??"

YES. Open up all the 10 ports allows up to 10 simultaneous file transfers per sender. If you open only Port 6891, users will be able to do only one file transfer at a time.

"ICQ it works but it just uploads file at a speed of max 4kbp/s usually 2 kpb/s slower than my 56 k modem LOL? "

You need port forwarding for ICQ as well.

Sorry if i sound stupid... how do u port forward for icq?

and wats the host ip address?

n1ghtFLY
14-06-2003, 02:14 PM
for the Host Ip add

is the one the IP on your LAN so the default one is 192.168.1.1

and for the ICQ

I use the icq pro to set it up (Not icq lite)

then change the menu to advanced mode

After this go to preferences

-- click the connection tab
-- click the user tab
-- tick the not using proxy
-- tick the use following TCP to listen .... -- enter "1024" to "65535"

A google search brought up the following:

ICQ Messaging, must be able to communicate with the ICQ server. This was done via port TCP 5190 to login.icq.com (previously 4000 UDP icq.mirabilis.com) and needs a bidirectional connection on this port number. ICQ Client to client connection is done using the TCP protocol, using port range 1024 - 65535. This means that the client needs an open listening ports within the mentioned range - 1024 to 65535. Opening all these ports is obviously impractical. The ICQ client can be configured to work with a firewall or proxy server see www.icq.com, but generally results in reduced ICQ functionality. If your using IP masquerading i.e NAT as most firewalls will, you will need a SOCKS proxy server to implement ICQ connectivity for more than one internal user.

First of all, you don't NEED port forwarding, to do ICQ file transfers. If you setup ICQ and let it know you are behind a firewall, it will work on most NATs provided the person you are communicating with is not also behind a firewall. If ICQ knows it is firewalled it will attempt to setup the file transfer differently to if it wasn't. (ie it will make an outgoing connection first to allow the file transfer to take place, as the nat will require the computer behind the nat will establish the connection).

The general port forwarding idea on ICQ works around the problem of being behind a nat when the other person is also firewalled, but you don't allocate every port above 1024 on the ICQ client (or worse the NAT firewall itself) for file transfers. Thats just crazy, and as mentioned impractical on a NAT where many clients may connect to ICQ.

Setup port forwarded ranges, for each PC that is NAT'd, 4 - 8 ports per ICQ client is plenty. Then forward these 4+ ports to the first machine that will be using ICQ on the LAN. Do another range for the next PC and so on. You need a different range of ports for each machine. If you must have bidirectional traffic that is ESTABLISHABLE from the outside world. Once you have these port forwards to each PC on the network, you should make that port range allocated to whatever PC you have allocated it to on the router (ie on the NB1300), the range of ports ICQ will receive on. Its somewhere in the preferences, where you can select a firewalled connection, "accept connections on ports" (or somehting like that) and you can specify a range of ports.

From memory, a long time ago when dealing with Sygate as a NAT, it explained the ICQ port forwarding very well. Maybe get your hands on the readme for SyGate or a configuration file I think it may of been in... and read up about ICQ port forwarding there.

As for port 5190... You don't need a port forward for this, and if you did, you'd only even be able to use one box behind the NAT firewall (in this case your NB1300), which kind of seems silly to me. Your client makes the initial connection, and hence the NAT router will allow bidirectional transport on that connection.

Also, a quick question...

are you using more than 1 PC on a network, using the NAT feature of the NB1300? If not, and all this port forwarding and configuration is an issue... I'd consider using the modem in bridged mode and using it as a regular ADSL modem, as opposed to a NAT router/firewall, and then perhaps using a personal firewall on your PC if security is a concern to you (which it should be!).

How's it goin ppl,

My apologies for this post, it relates to the file transfer with MSN...

I have just connected to Swiftel using the NB1300 and last night tried to configure my MSN Messenger to do file transfers...

I have been following the posts between n1ghtFLY and support and tried setting up the port forwarding the way support suggests...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
ID....Public Port....Private Port....Port Type....Host IP Address
1........6891...............6891...........TCP.... ....192.168.0.xxx
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

...but I couldn't get it to work at all....

do I need to do ipconfig to find out my host ip address or is mine just going to be 192.168.1.xxx???

For the ports 21 and 23 its 192.168.1.255, I've entered this in as my ip address but it still doesn't work.

Cheers folks for your help!

Versanis

It's ok dude, i have it figured. The 'host' IP address you need to enter is the IP of the computer on the network you wish to forward it to.

For example, my router is set to be 192.168.1.1, and my pc which it is connected to is set to be 192.168.1.7

You must set the port forwarding to go to the machine that needs to recieve the data, so on mine i have forwarded ports 6891 and 6892 to my pc's IP address at 192.168.1.7

hope this helps you :)

Hey Versanis,

Cheers for that, worked like a charm....

nhat_18.... try and get just one of your machines working first, try the USB one which is what I have at the moment.

Open up a DOS prompt and type ipconfig this will give you your machines ip address....

now open your browser and goto 192.168.1.1 then go to the prot forwarding section.

now add the ports you want 6891, 6892... etc

the Host ip address is your machines ip address that you got when you typed ipconfig

I added a 6891 and 6892 on both TCP and UDP, just to be safe.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
ID....Public Port....Private Port....Port Type....Host IP Address
1........6891...............6891...........TCP.... ....192.168.0.xxx
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's all working for me now... I just had my host ip address incorrect.... hope that works for you.

Ciao

Virtual Server Port Forwarding Instructions For The Billion Bipac

http is port 80, or webserver,

to forward a port, first of all ya must be using the ethernet link between your computer and bipac,

Ok, I've tried all the above, and I've had success with MSN, but not ICQ.

I'm using Miranda to support both networks (ICQ & MSN).

Problem is, when I set the ports for Miranda to use as 24500-24505, and then I try to send a file, for some STUPID reason, it sends on port 3103 (or some other random port).

Anyone know how the hell I can get around this? It's somewhat annoying :P

Ok then how do I add a server?

For example, for yahoo messenger voice connection it mentions on
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mesg/twin/twin-36.html :

--------------------------------
Voice Chat Connection:

Protocol: UDP or TCP

Servers:
v1.vc.scd.yahoo.com
v2.vc.scd.yahoo.com
v3.vc.scd.yahoo.com
v4.vc.scd.yahoo.com
v5.vc.scd.yahoo.com
v6.vc.scd.yahoo.com
v7.vc.scd.yahoo.com
v8.vc.scd.yahoo.com
v9.vc.scd.yahoo.com
v10.vc.scd.yahoo.com
v11.vc.scd.yahoo.com
v13.vc.sc5.yahoo.com
vc1.vip.scd.yahoo.com

Ports: 5000-5010
--------------------------------

So I would be able to forward eg Port 5000 selecting TCP....but where in the NB1300 would I be able to forward the yahoo server?

Thank you.

Hi All,

Does anyone knwo how to get MSN Video/Voice to work over an ADSL Netgear DM602 Router/Modem?

Any ideas would be kindly appreciated and thank you in advance.

Gidday

Normally all you need to do to get MSN to send/receive files through a firewall/Nat/Router is go to the main MSN window, click on Tools>Options>Connections> Tick I use a Proxy Server,

Type = HTTP Proxy
Server = <your gateway IP> in my case 192.168.2.1 (this will vary on the modem/router you use, but is normally 192.168.0.1
Port = 80

I have setup heaps od client PC's using this method and that's all you need to do with version 6 and later of MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger is a PITA to do.

HTH :D

Hey there Mate,

Thanks in advance for your time and efforts. I have tried your suggesition to use proxy and to change the type to http using my Default gateway but unfortunately i get the same error. I tried port forwarding again opned up all ports and even tried windows messanger. But it is never able to establish a connection.

I have downloaded and used Eyball caht and the audio works just fine, but really want it to work with MSN? Do you have any other ideas?

Many Thanks,

You need your NAT firewall to support UPnP for Audio/Video to work in MSN Messenger. You can make it work without it but you have to open a whole pile of ports.

see: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324214&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH

Microsoft QUOTE "The only way to use voice and video communications with Windows Messenger through a non-UPnP firewall (for example, Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000) is to configure the firewall to allow incoming traffic on UDP ports 5004 through 65535."

The NetComm NB1300 DOESN'T support UPnP (I whish I'd known I needed it before I bought it!!).

I get around it my using the EzyConfig tool that comes with the modem to keep to sets of settings for it. When I'm going to be using MSN for audio and video I set the modem to adsl only mode and use the computer I'm communicating from to control the connection (set up a broadband connection).

1st use the tool to save your current configuration. (Tip: If the tool doesn't seem to see the modem, click 'View My Modem').

To do this set the modem to bridged PPoE LLC and clear all the username and passwords for logging on to the adsl service. Set them on the broadband connection on the computer. Use EzyConfig to save these settings.

This will cause problems with any other computers on your network unless you set them up to share the internet connection on the main computer that now holds the broadband connection settings.

When finished roll back using the saved config from earlier.

This is painful, but unless you buy a new router with UPnP then it's the only way (unless you open ports 5004 through 65535 - ouch!! given you can only do it 1 at a time). If you're going wireless then that might be a good time to upgrade or something.

regards
Jon
