Hi Guys,

Just a quick question, i have been running fine now for a couple of weeks with a outage, but when i checked my net this morning nothing was happening, so i checked my server logs and saw the following message

CHAP authenication failed

Now this has been happening for about 24 hours now. I have reset the modem with no success. I haven't changed anything on the server config side. The last resort would be a reset of the server but would this do anything?

RH9
dlink 300 modem (the old model)
2.4 kernel

Any ideas?? What does this messge mean?

Rebooted and fixed.

Any explaination as to why this happen?

CHAP authentication failed looks to be a failure to successfully login via your username and password.

Had you tried stopping your pppoe client and restarting it? If not rebooting maybe have inherently done that for you.

Difficult to say exactly why. You could have a look in the logs around that CHAP message to see if it sheds any light.

Was the modem line sync on solid at the time it wasnt working?

Could have just been a temporary outage.

Yeah i did restart the pppoe deamon. no effect.

The line sync never dropped out that i know of.

i think i found the problem to be that fact that swiftel changed my allocated IP address. I changed address and i just carried over my existing IP address. Then one day i got the CHAP authenication error message and i restarted and i recieved a different IP.

I asked swiftel and they said when you change address you change IP address

I thought i would keep the same IP address as long as i was with swiftel. It is a bit annoying because i run a number of different servers that i will now need to change.

I would have thought you would have noticed that probelm immediately when you changed physical locations. Oh well that would explain some of the weirdness though.

But it didn't change straight away,

i kept the old IP for about 3 weeks and then one day it just changed.

Very weird?????????
