I am trouble with a Mac that is hooked up to our Netcomm NB1300 ADSL modem. For some reason it doesn't get access to the network straight away. The sequence of events to get access are...

1) Start up Mac
2) Try to access network - Mac locks up
3) Reboot Mac - Network now works

Hmmm - now I don't know much about Mac's, except that everyone tells me they are great because they just work and are nothing like the Windows stuff that crashes all the time...

Does anyone know the settings that I need to make our Mac behave itself?

Cheers,

Paul

Sounds like it's barfing with DHCP.

Set the machine up with a static IP. Should solve the problem.

Using something like 192.168.1.3/255.255.255.0 should help. :)

Cheers,

Hi All. Can anyone recommend any good net monitor/network status sharewares for the MC OS X platform?

Depends how experienced you are at Mac OSX...

It's literally BSD under the hood so many of the Linux/BSD source code will compile up for you. :)

Just grab the source code and compile away...

Items such as mrtg (http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/) work well if your ADSL modem/router supports SNMP.

M@tty, M@tty, M@tty.. Things like that are the reason I stopped using a Linux desktop and switched to OSX.

Dude, check out http://macupdate.com or http://versiontracker.com. You should be able to find something that suits your needs there..

Unless you're masochistic. Then, by all means, download something and try and compile it. But:

a) Don't bother hoping for a graphical interface, as the custom X11 libraries for Mac OSX (needed for most *nix gui programs) prevent most graphical open source programs from compiling and..

b) Don't expect any help from the developers of most of these programs as they really couldn't care about Mac's in most cases, as they don't have one to test on. Unless you're a serious developer and are able to fix your own issues and feed patches back to them, they will, at best, politely tell you to @#$^ off.

Best of luck, mate.

For your issue with TC/IP on the mac os 9 platform. Go into the Macintosh HD into the System folder into Preferences and trash the TCP/IP preference. It will automatically recreate another preference. You may then need to go into the Apple Menu and Control Panels and then TCP/IP, and ensure you have the Server set to DHCP. (or manual if you want manual)

Thanks everyone for the tips - I'm not being rude, I just haven't had a chance to get near my girlfriends computer to try things out ;)

When I do I'll be sure and post another thanks and let you know which one worked.

Cheers,

Paul
