View Full Version : News Server
How long do you guys keep your news posts on the server. I keep getting the message that the message has expired yet it's only been posted 12 hour before?

I guess to have a greater amount of groups on news groups would require swiftdsl to have an increase on their news group server space.
I have had pretty much no complete binaries files using the swiftdsl news server. My dial up provider had an increased news group listing etc.
I guess that is a minor gripe, that is probably just me. I guess to have a more complete binaries listing would require in the region of 'terabytes' of space on the server, which is probably not very fesable.
Currently your server has 200 gigs of space if i recall
Anyway. My rant is finished
Cheers.

For now, this page might help:
http://news.cis.dfn.de/
They run a free, uncensored news service. I'm not sure what the storage times are, but check it out.
It needs you to register, but that's just an email with your name & email addresss. THey don't send you any email whatsoever, no mailing lists or any of that crap.

Can any of you that were having problems with news articles expiring please post to let me know if the issue is persisting.
The spool size increased by about 20Gb since adjusting the quota.

I will check the news groups list tonight after work to see how they are running.
Cheers.
So far so good. I'm now getting articles around 24 hours old that haven't expired, which is twice as good as before.
Good to see

Yes, the spool is up around 245Gb now.
My suspicion was that articles were expiring due to spool size limitations rather than message age, this seems to be accurate.
OK there seems to be a problem as I have not seen any new articles for the last 24 hours. Is the news server down

Is the news server in Perth or Sydney?
Also, how much do those 200Gb drives cost you guys? Are they cheap?

Perth.
"Also, how much do those 200Gb drives cost you guys? Are they cheap?"
No; they are part of a Netapps box that is not at all cheap.
Perhaps DSL-Tech can explain what that disk array costs (ball park) and its advantages.
Still no knew articles, in particular aus.dvd

your news server is fine but why not just proxy another news server?

For me not all the news services are fine. I think i have mentioned this in another topic, that when i post something, i have to use the google news search system to see what replies i got etc.
Tee amount of news groups is not that bad, it aint great but we get what we can dont we. I just hope they can fix the news server so i can see my own posts after i post them.
Cheers,
