View Full Version : Can we get a decent feed for aus.*

I'd like to see a decent feed for the aus.* hierarchy. Currently there are many, many missing posts. To the point where the groups are not really usable. See aus.tv.digital or aus.cars for examples.
Binary groups can be excluded as far as I am concerned, but I would really like to see at least 90 day post retention in aus.*
Any chance of this happening soon?
Thanks,
Peter.

Just because you don't care about something doesn't mean an integral part of the internet should be removed. Many binaries that are unlikely to have complete parts were being removed from the old feed (I don't know about the new feed). I just did a quick check and retention seems to be about 1 month in the comp.* hierarchy, which isn't bad.

Not sure if Swiftel have a working Telstra feed right now. The evidence would suggest that there are no articles flowing in from the Telstra servers, because Telstra has a lot more stuff available.

True, just because I don't want something doesn't mean that you are not allowed to have it. By the same logic, I am allowed to state my preference for resolving a potential resource/availability conflict. Following the logic even further, Swiftel are free to choose to take my comments on board or ignore them and I am free to find alternative providers for services that matter to me.
Binary groups may be entrenched these days, but in the good old days, were considered pure evil. Of course, in the good old days you could get ALL the news globbaly using a 2400 baud modem connection. In terms of resource demand, taking out binaries and concentrating on the real Usenet simplifies things immensely.

Agreed, 30 days is good, 90 would be better :) Yes, I know, if I want the articles to hang around longer, I can make my own arrangements. And I might just do that, as long as the articles appear in the first place. Long retention periods on text only posts are not a problem, especially if they live on a sensible file system. Binaries will obviously cause a lot more headaches, both in terms of disk space usage and in terms of other resources.
If all you want to access is Aus.* then join NEW.INDIVIDUAL.NET
It is free, better then anything Swiftel will ever provide for text groups.
I have been using it for months with NO problems.

I already use individual.net for the aus.* hierarchy and a few others and agree that it is much better than what Swiftel offer right now.
However, I see no technical reason for Swiftel not being able to offer the same service to their customers. My first preference is for my ISP to offer a better level of service, choosing an alternative provider for news is akin to writing off Swiftel as unable to provide a Usenet feed.

Well, second preference is not to bad.
You have stated as much that you don't actually need the Swiftel server.
As far a I am concerned you cannot beat NEWS.INDIVIDUAL.NET for text groups.
