View Full Version : SNTP Servers
Anyone know of any NSW or close sntp servers that my Billion 741GEV2 will sync with?
Thread to answer I found (http://www.741ge.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=9&t=1775&st=0&#entry7928)
I found the above thread on the Billion Forum

I think the question should be:
Does Swiftel have an NTP server we can Sync against?
I would rather a Swiftel one that having to go NetBound just to get the time of day. ;)
Also details of the Stratum would be helpful! :D
Cheers,
M@tt.
I would prefer a swiftel one but at least I found one that works. It can hardly be a bandwidth killer considering it is set to sync very infrequently.

True, it is nice having one that works, but if swiftel has one it might be better to use that.
Can somebody advise me (us?) if swiftel has a SNTP server?? (dsl_tech?)
Any advice one way or the other would be nice.
thanks

If you are just trying to correct the time on your computer, why don't you use Niel's SwiftelMeterII (http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~neils/) as it checks the time automatically for you daily.

it looks interesting, although I've been too lazy to try and set up WINE so it wouldn't run on my PC normally.. (not windows).
Also, I tend to be a little paranoid about downloading things...
No, I really did want to ask about SNTP servers, but thanks for the thought.. :)

Why not run your own NTP server?

I am running this on my w2k3 server. Its syncing to time servers, as well as a GPS receiver I am using.
It also trims your pc clock by learning how fast or slow it runs.
Best bit of software I have found, I was so happy I immediately purchased it (shareware).

Hi Zephyr,
Are you running either Linux of MacOSX?
It's pretty easy to get an NTP server going, failing that just run ntpdate via crontab... it's not as reliable but the time is still pretty accurate for the majority of things...
Cheers,
Matt.

Hi Matt,
actually, I run FreeBSD...
I know I *could* run an SNTP server at home, but I'd rather have one external to my home network, so it doesn't matter if my machines are on or not. The main reason is that my ADSL modem gets its time from a time server and if I have one set up on a box on my home network, it means that box always needs to be on and I don't have a box that fits that category ATM. I know that there are other sites "out there" that are accessible as time servers but I was hoping that Swiftel would have one on their networks somewhere that could be used locally, saving unnecessary traffic from leaving their network and reducing unnecessary load on the few "well-known" Australian NTP servers.
Actually, even hearing a definitive "no" would have been an answer, but so far one hasn't been forthcoming. I guess I should have emailed Swiftel support directly...
thanks for your comment, though.. :)
