View Full Version : Spam Email - How Do I Stop It?

There have been a number of requests for Swiftel to implement various forms of email filtering. We are very reluctant to do this for a large number of reasons.
Two solutions to this problem, if it is in fact a problem for individual Swiftel ADSL users, could be these products; one free and one chargeable after a 30 day trial:
http://www.geeba.org/magic/
http://www.firetrust.com/products/mailwasherpro/
There are many other such products and Swiftel ADSL users are invited to comment on what they have found to be a good solution for their particular problems.
I'm glad swiftel will not implement any spam filtering at their end. Spam is a major nuisance and criminal penalties should apply as it slows down the internet but there is no such thing as a perfect filter and my major concern is that a spam filter may occasionally block legitimate email. The only solution at present is to change your email address you use which should cut down on the spam at least for a while. I have my own domain name that redirects all email to one of my email mailboxes. If I give out an email address on a website or whatever, I will often choose a unique address@mydomainname. Then if I start getting spam on that email, I simply change the redirection for that particular address so it goes to "nowhere@nowhere.com" I hope this isn't a legitimate email address but in any case it no longer comes to me.
What I'm doing costs nothing and greatly reduces my spam problem.
I really really wished swiftel would consider getting email filtering installed....
I get about 100 spam messages a day.... and I cannot change email address for various reasons... I've had the same one for 5 years myname@myownsite.com which forwards to myname@swiftdsl.com.au... I do have good spam filtering going on my side of the pipe... but it is still annoying... when I was with pacific internet I got maybe 20 spam a day... they had filtering installed... (only good thing with pacific was customer support and spam filtering :) ) I never heard of anyone not getting through to me with their emails...
Some very basic steps, like blocking known spam ISPs should at least be undertaken..
Well I understand your frustration but I am against spam filtering at the isp as I don't want to risk legitmate emails being blocked. Even one in a thousand could be a major hassle for me.
I also vote "NO" to SPAM filtering by Swiftel.
Now as for my employer, that's a different matter. (I keep winning these lotteries in Nigeria  )
Spam,
Yes well here's how I deal with it and with great success.
I'm using ORFEE found here http://www.vamsoft.com/orf
As i host my own mail and web its the best thing since sliced bread. Its also exchange aware and will use AD to check known users. Bolts into several spam lists real time and does a heap of other nice tricks, to many to list.
Hope it helps someone.
PS. Swiftel please don't filter mail.
Cheers

What I'm doing costs nothing and greatly reduces my spam problem. Still costs bandwidth for the SMTP server to download the spam mail, and then to attempt to forward it to your nowhere@nowhere.com email.

It never reaches the swiftel servers as it is redirected to nowhere by my free redirection service (godaddy.com) Never touches my computer or the swiftel servers so no bandwidth usage!

I'm using Mailwasher Pro and my blacklist now has a gazillion addies in it  , I am still getting at least 200 SPAM emails a day, anyone have any other suggestions on how to reduce the crap?.
I cannot change my email address so that option is out, I have my own domain and just today it seems to have been hit with (I think) is the mydoom virus as I am now getting hundreds of emails to *insertanynamehere*@mydomain.com, this happened about a month ago too and then stopped after a day or two.
Nothing is downloading onto my system, but it has to be affecting the Swift mailserver as well as being a major PITA.
I also have a sneaking suspicion that some arsehalf has added my mail addy to some bloody mailing list as the last few weeks have increased by 200%

If you got that many in your black-list you're not using MailWasher as indended! :p
Use the real-time blackhole lists, SpamCop support and also get the new MailWasher Pro 4.0 which has some 'smarts' built in.
My own lists are under 100.. :p
I also get 1000's of SPAM messages each wek (part of owning the domain onlineshopping.com.au. ) -- you just become a target!
Cheers,
Matt.

As a general rule...
Setup your mail server to NOT accept catch-alls.... it should bounce non-existant Email addresses.
Also add 'known bad hosts' to your reject list on your Mail server. :D
This reduces the crap considerably.
Cheers,
Matt.

Hi Matt
Didn't even know there was a version 4 out there  , thanx for that, will check it out.
I have been using the Spamcop option though, everything I get is already marked blacklisted, but its still there.
I have also made sure the "catch all" is off, done that months ago, but it must be broken going by the number of "no name" mail coming in.
Will look into it all again, thanx :)
