i am a noob and so can someone tell me what binaries are? when i visit them they are just random symbols.

Hi Alf,

The Binaries are encoded, looking rather like random symbols and text.

The news reader client as mentioned above will extract them.

Some of the binary postings are in multiple parts.

These are most likely yenc encoded files or partial files. Outlook (Express) doesn't support yenc out of the box and for multipart files you usually need all the parts.

If you go to a "tame" group like alt.binaries.pictures.animals you will usually only find single-part posts and no yenc ones (as its usually just a Mavis sharing pictures of her cat).
