For those running their own mail servers of unix/linux.

you can also check the sender's mail servers on various blacklists such as ordb.org, spamhaus.org and the list goes on.

ordb.org also has a good open relay test to test your mail server.

Spamassasin is quite good.

I've been using it for a while now, and no false positives yet.

Yes, I used to run it and found it very nice. The only problem I found was that it sometimes picked HTML newsletters as spam and then converted all the HTML into text making it next to impossible to read :\

But I ended up just adding the newsletter domains to the white-list and all was good.
