There appears to be no threads on this subject, so I thought I would throw one in.

To stop spam I'm currently using SpamNet (http://www.cloudmark.com/products/spamnet/) - I've been using the program since early beta and I must say it is the most effective spam stopping program that I've used. I get around 100 spam emails a day and SpamNet catches all of that.

The unique way it works is the reason it is so effective. Every time a spam email comes in you click the "block" button on the toolbar, it creates a mathematical representation of the email and then goes to the main SpamNet server and tells it that this email is spam. Then when you receive an email it makes the mathematical representation and checks with the SpamNet server if it's on the list.

If it is, it is moved to the "Spam" folder, if not, it stays in your Inbox.

There is no AI involved trying to guess if its spam or not - its all done by other SpamNet uses. It only takes one user to say its spam to have all 720,000 other SpamNet users protected.

If you find a non-spam message in your Spam folder, simply click "Unbock" and it will send a message to the SpamNet server saying that it may be in error. It uses a rating system, the oldest and more reputable people get a high rating, new users get a zero rating. So if a zero rating person says something is spam, then a higher rating person says it isn't, its more likely to believe the higher rating person.

But then again, if a high rating person marks something as spam, and then 20 people say it isn't, the server will go with the majority and then reduce the rating of the person who originally set it as spam.

The backend of the program is a little complicated, but from the end-users view, its simple. Just click "Block" if you see a spam message or click "Unblock" if you find something that is not spam in the Spam folder.

The program costs USD$3.99 a month which works out to be around $5.50 a month, well worth the cost if you ask me.

It comes with a 30 day trial if you want to see how well it works.

there are quite a few spam programs available now. The one I use is McAfee SpamKiller.

It may cost a bit more initially but is so easy to use, will work on numerous different email accounts (including hotmail) and it works a treat.

definately worth a look.

I believe Norton's has a similar product out as well.

Has anyone else had a problem with Norton Internet Security with its spam program slowing down internet speeds?

Hi jantje,

I have had NIS running on XP Pro (Service Pack 1) for only 4 to 5 hours of browsing so far and no slowdown yet. On the 1500/256 connection I still get above 160KB/s.

Maybe I need to do more browsing... also need to do less work and enjoy more fun things like swiftel broadband.

Cheers.
