O.K I've tried. God have I tried. Can someone point me in the right direction to establish a shared internet connection.
Both laptops are part of the same workgroup. Both have their own names allocated. Both are running XP Pro. Both have their firewalls disabled. I've also disabled Nortons Firewall. One is connected to the net, but the other can only send a signal but not recieve. My housemate is starting to loose faith in me!!
......................I'm too old for this!!

Can you ping each pc from the other? In a DOS box, what does IPConfig tell you?

Are they all a part of the same subnet? This needs to be the same subnet as the router ...

And I prefer to not use DHCP ...

If the router is 192.168.1.254 then your pcs should each be using a unique address along the lines of 192.168.1.x where x will be a number between 1 and 253 but not within the assigned DHCP pool of the router, if the router has DHCP enabled.

On each of the pcs, load Windoze Exploder, select networking/properties, select the apropriate LAN connection, disable the DHCP and check (and correct if necessary) the assignment of the relevant addresses and mask (255.255.255.0).

Make sure that the router's address is configured as your gateway ...
