Hi, just wondering if anyone can answer a few questions i have...
Any news or a specific date when qld is likely to go live?
I see WA is now (or as of tomorrow) getting free WAIX xfer, just wondering if there was any plan to link with PIPE (even without free traffic)?
Question about a possible network setup...
If i have it setup as such...
ADSL modem -> router -> switch -> pc
-> pc
-> pc
-> pc
..etc..
each pc would have their own internet routable ip (ie. NOT nat'd)
will my local pc to pc traffic count towards my usage? I wouldn't think it would...but i remember reading somewhere something weird like that
thanks alot :D

That's a very similar setup to what I'm running here.
Just to confirm your setup, your router presents a public static IP address (from Swiftel) to the world, but internally, it will present a different IP address to your LAN.
Each of your pcs will have an IP address similar to the internal IP address on the router, and on the same subnet.
Something like :
Device Public IP Private IP
Router: 218.x.x.x 192.y.y.1
PC 1: 192.y.y.2
PC 2: 192.y.y.3
PC 3: 192.y.y.4
PC 4: 192.y.y.5
within that sort of setup, none of the totally private traffic gets routed outside of your private address space, and therefore it isn't counted towards traffic.

the opposite :p
each pc will have its own globally routable ip (say 218.x.x.x) etc etc

Firstly I answer this with the following cavet - I don't work for swiftel, so my answer isn't to be taken as what swiftel do.
My answer is it shouldn't as the other PC's are on the same segment (subnet) as each other.
Normally, you wouldn't get billed for traffic until you download something that comes down via your WAN (ADSL) link.
Hope that clears things up.

I would agree with sticky_chicken's answer too.
The traffic should all still be routing internally through your switch and not going through the router.
Again, that's not official, and I would be looking for one of SwiftDSL's techs to give you a definitive response.

thanks for that - thats what i thought, just checking if it was my warped ideas or not :D looks like swiftel might be a go-er for me when they come online in brissy soonish (hopefully!) :D

rather belated reply but,..
assuming that the IP addresses of your PCs are all on the same subnet (maybe a /29 subnet mask ie 255.255.255.248) the router would not route the traffic out of the wan interface.
IF your IP addresses are not on the same subnet then you're probably doing something funky on your LAN but it still probably wouldn't go through your wan interface because it would have to come back again to get to the host.
if you're running windows the tcp/ip stack will automatically calculate whether you're on the same subnet (based on the subnet mask in tcp/ip properties) and either send it directly to the destination address (if it is) or send it to the router (if it isn't).
edit: btw, this is the way tcp/ip works and has nothing to do with swiftel's policies/procedures - it wouldn't end up on their network. actually, if you're running a switch, it won't even get to your router.
