Me to I sent myself one at 10 pm last night it still hasnt arrived either I have no trouble sending but who ever I send to are not getting them either I think it must be a fall out from the Telstra email disastor of last week so expect a lot of email will be lost.

they just sent me a new SMS... mail server outage due to spam virus, more notifications in an hour... pretty cool, getting alerts via SMS :D

I contacted a guy on the help desk- pretty hopeless actually. Sounded like he just got out of bed..literally. He was not in the slightest bit interested in telling me what was going on.

I mean, what's with this callback service with the support desk... they're never gonna call us back!
and I was under the impression that the support center would be open 9-5 AEST... obviously not

It also concerns me (going on swiftels growth in another email) that if they are growing this fast, how the hell can they sustain good support by an answering machine? ok, the SMS's are good, but it tells us something that we know already.
My only concern right now is, if, any of my emails have been lost today. :(

Email is just trickling thru now, but I have only 2 emails! as in the last 30 mins.
Does this mean I have lost everything before this time stamp?????????? :(
Mr Adrian

Well it's nice to get sms alerts about the problem, but for me the issue isn't so much being informed about whats going on, but rather the fact that such a problem is taking so long to fix! I am new to Swiftel, and although the ADSL has been pretty good so far, i am beginning to regret choosing their email as my main business address. Sure i could re-send the more important and urgent emails i sent today using my personal address on Hotmail, but that won't look very proffesional, will it?
You'd think there would be a suitable contingency plan for the attack of a spam virus, I mean these days such an occurance can't be that unusual? I don't understand why they can't simply delete all the spam mails from the queue and block the sender(s) access to the mail server until they have been contacted and the virus neutralised!
As i am a new user, i would like to ask others who have used swiftel for longer: Is this the first time something of this magnitude has happened to email, or is this the level of service i should expect in the future?
I would also like to ask the Swiftel techs and engineers what they will be changing to deal with such attacks in the future? Will email simply go down for 24+ hours every time someone gets a virus, or is something going to be done to safeguard against this?

shouldn't the forumadmin or someone from swiftel reply to all our concerns????
Is it possible some of our email will be lost??? Or is it banked up and will be delivered when all is up and running again??

Maybe they're just sitting back, watching who to suspend from the Swiftel service... let's see... probably tangcla and lukesal :D

That is absolutely ridiculous suspending someone for voicing their concerns. Thats what these forums are all about, are they not???Possibly losing email is an important issue here. We are all concerned about this, and basically want to know the chances of this occuring.
After all we are Swiftels business customers.

Yes, suspending anyone voicing their concerns constructively is ridiculous......
I am voicing my opinions in concern.

no, i think tancla was talking about admins suspending users who originated the virus..

no, they were right -- my point was that maybe they're just picking out the most troublesome users and punishing them for giving Swiftel a hard time :D
but anyway... seems like the old emails are coming through now, I think...

I have one of 2 from last night, but I suspect theres a lot more to come yet! all from today.
I actually sent one earlier on today, can anyone advise me whether it would of gone through or not? (through webmail). I can see it in the sent items folder though.

Mr Adrian
28-10-2003, 07:17 PM
people are saying problem is fixed but i dont think so. Sure i received an email from 4:00pm AEST, but the email i SENT to my hotmail account at about 3:00pm AEST still has not arrived. I am presuming the same goes for all the REAL emails i sent during the day.
Does this mean they have been lost? I don't mind re-sending them, but i do not want to send the same email twice, as this won't look very proffesional to my clients, especially considering my company offers internet and software solutions!!
So swiftel people, can you please tell me if i should re-send my emails, or will they get through eventually? if so, any idea when?

I would say the emails from about 10.30 last night have been lost and will not come through as I got 2 through from the very early hours of the morning and the ones coming through now are from this afternoon so down the drain went my business for today cost me heaps..

No emails have been lost. We expect the server will take 4-5 hours to clear the backlog.

Sorry Richard I posted before reply from you it is confusing that I am getting through email from late this afternoon but none from overnight will these still come through ? and shouldnt the ones sent before this afternoon come through first ?

me either but it is strange that I am only getting mail from late this afternoon when I know for a fact that I had heaps sent this morning inclucding 1 to myself and still they have not arrived. So putting 2 and 2 together that does not add up to 4 .

Guys i wouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions. Swiftel have been the most upfront and honest ISP i have ever dealt with and if they are saying your email is back logged and not lost then i would believe them. I will stand corrected if it is not but i recieved SMS messages alerting me to the outages and i believe them when they say it will be up and running soon. if you have been in Melbourne you would know sometimes these things take time but when there are fixed it is great :D

I honestly dont know what some of you people expect
I work at one of the big 3 ISP's on tech support part time, and when we have mail issues.....(all the time)..... people hear the message on the phone system saying we are having mail issues and there is no eta, yet they wait on the phone for 30mins finally get thru, and then they demand to know what the porblem is and what we are doing, and when it will be fixed, and i reply with NO ETA, and i have no info on the problem, just there is a issue and to wait and goodbye......
Ive gotten to the stage, where i start making reasons up and the customer will go ahh ok i c........ when its complete garbage and half the words are made up im telling them.....
I think its great Swiftel post what is going on and the SMS is great service, but does calling there helpdesk asking for more information really going to help you or them, And you will get a phone tech that has talked to 50 other customers, and by the time he answers you, he is repeating the same thing again, so ofcourse he isnt going to be very helpful at all because he has no idea what is going on either, and most of the time dosnt really care.
I also rely on my email for business, but i understand that there will be issues, and that swiftel are working to fix it, and the best thing to do is just wait for it to be fixed, because you really cant do anything.

Hello all,
Apologies for the lack of updates today. It's been quite hectic trying to solve this problem.
As DSL_Tech mentioned earlier, the clearing of the queue was slowed yet again by another spamming host. When it was blocked, the mail server began to clear its queue relatively quickly.
We're down to under 10,000 now, and it many cases emails will be delivering within reasonable time. I'll be monitoring it all evening to make sure it continues to clear the queue.
Sysadmin
29-10-2003, 12:10 AM
The queue is now down to 1000. This is probably quite near it's 'natural' level. This is normal and not a problem since new incoming emails take priority over ones that have been in the queue longer.
Tests show that email is now delivering immediately so this problem can be considered resolved.
Our next step is to seriously investigate how we can prevent this happening again and minimise impact if it does.

A round of applause for the Swiftel sysadmins who worked very, very long hours to prevent a possible disastrous situation halting email for all Swiftel customers for days or weeks (as in the recent Telstra experience).
Very well done guys.
