I've had this error since Thursday 2nd october and havn't had net access since then (im posting this from work).
I use a smoothwall box for my adsl connection. This has been sucessfully working for over 18 months now.
Only once has I seen this error before. The old solution for this was to swap network cards.
"Apparently" for some reason your mac address gets blocked or stuck or something. Changing the network card (which has a different mac address) normally solves this.
This time however this no longer works. I've hunted everywhere and it seems that I should ask for a line reset or something.

Anyone else had this before?

Yep.. when telstra stuffed the line
As soon as you mention the timeout they usually say they will test the line and get back to you .. or there is some kind out outage at the moment

ok cool.
I doubt its an outage.
I can use my windows xp pppoe client fine. Probably because the equipment at the exchange has never seen this particular mac address or something.
I've logged a call with swiftel to check it out anyway.
In the mean time i'll hunt around and see if I can find another network card that works under smoothwall and test it tonight.
No worries.
I guess something isn't getting through, somehow.. somewhere :)

well that whirlpool forum explaination "seems" to make some sense.
1) If you try to create too many PPPoE sessions within a certain time period with an (or in Australia's case - Telstra's) ADSL Access Concentrator, it would appear to block your ethernet MAC address. This is probably to prevent (ok, I'll abuse the term) "hackers" from launching Denial Of Service attacks on the Access Concentrator. This is a reasonable tactic, this is the Internet remember.
It will be interesting to know the true answer however.
It's been about 6 months since this happened before. I found my original thread when it was suggested to swap NIC's over.

Damn I changed the mac address connected to the adsl modem and it had no effect :(
Oct 6 20:12:23 smoothwall pppoe[383]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets
Oct 6 20:12:23 smoothwall pppd[367]: Modem hangup
Oct 6 20:12:23 smoothwall pppd[367]: Connection terminated.
Oct 6 20:12:23 smoothwall pppd[367]: Using interface ppp0
Oct 6 20:12:23 smoothwall pppd[367]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyp0
ps: yes I realise the time is wrong :|

well, after almost a week of stuffing aroun i've finally found the problem.
Seems i've been moved off the concentrator that I have been on for the last 18+ months!
By using the roaring pengiun pppoe client I was able to see some extra information about my connection.
The command "pppoe -I eth1 -A" gave me :
---------------------------------------- ---------
Access-Concentrator: vet2-exhibition
AC-Ethernet-Address: 00:60:38:e6:80:28
---------------------------------------- ---------
It used to be vwt2-windsor.
I simple change in my pppoe client and it is now finally working again!
Who is responsible for these sorts of changes? Swiftel or Telstra?
EDIT:
For completeness the following change was responsible :(
It would seem that the Telstra change below was responsible.
