View Full Version : swiftdsl email server problems?

I'm wondering if this problem is limited to myself, or are others having the same issue.
Today my swiftdsl email account is not receiving emails from external (non swiftdsl) sources, nor is it sending to external servers.
Looking back through an email list which sees regular traffic, I have nothing since some time on the 20th.
My other (non swiftdsl, based in the US) email service is working fine, both send and receive.
er, just to be clear - local email client talking to the server is working fine, looks like the server is neither receiving from the internet, nor sending out to it.

NEWS FLASH: email sent from swiftdsl.com.au to softhome.net (in the US of A) took an hour to be delivered.
(and before you ask, it was a test message, with only a couple of lines in it)
Am I the only one seeing this kind of issue? (could be my US mail service is having issues)

Can't give an authoritative answer on this one. A plausible explanation may be that there are quite a few offline mail servers and backlogged mail exchangers around the world at the moment due to the recent spate of virus activity.
At Swiftel we currently have abnormally large queues on our MXs which are caused by a handful of offline mail servers that use us as a backup. However, email is still flowing in a timely fashion in both directions so these queues are a symptom and not a cause.
All I can suggest at this stage is to see how it goes over the next 24hours. We're keeping an eye on things.

Yes, I'm seeing symptoms which would match issues you're describing - mail is not completely failing, just queueing up and taking unusually long times (eg 1 hour, earlier).
I'll pay closer attention to that mail account on Monday and let you know if I'm still seeing issues.
thanks.

I confirm that email to-ing and fro-ing seems to be normal* :D
*where "normal" means that ~85% of the emails I receive are forms of *electronic noise* generated as a by-product of the various viruses currently circling the globe
I've noticed this issue is still happening.
I sent an email via the swiftel SMTP server today, as yet it hasn't arrived. It had nothing in the body, the only thing in the email was "test" in the subject.
Any idea how long this will take to fix?
I send an email from hotmail to the same account and it arrives in seconds.

The email servers seem still playing up. The imcoming server is accepting e-mails (not bouncing), but not delivering them to me :(

Large email queues have indeed been slowing down email delivery to the swiftdsl.com.au domain. Our mail exchangers have been reconfigured to process their queues more quickly and the way swiftdsl email routes internally has also changed to be more direct.
I would expect the queue to reach normal levels by tomorrow. The new email routing should prevent this particular problem reoccurring.
Sable, you say you're having a problem with POP. What error are you seeing?

Sorry my bad wording, I meant I cannot check whether the incoming pop server is functional as I can't send test mail as I have outgoing mail in outbox. However pop server is ok - just received 3rd party mail

Does this mean you've noticed SMTP failure when sending through mail.swiftdsl.com.au? I've not been able to spot it happening.
Anybody else experiencing this?

Look at the thread entitled "Open Relay at Swiftel" or something along those lines.
There's a new virus hitting the streets, and my server is seeing it now at frequencies greater than one a minute. I'm pretty well bouincing them as they knock on the door, thus reducoing traffic, but most email servers don't do that, and intead accept the incoming traffic. In this case, each message is around 150Kb.
I'd say that other servers are seeing something similar, but if they're accepting the traffic coming in, they're going to be pulling a lot more traffic than I am ...
