Hi everyone,

As a bit of a newbie can anyone tell me does Swiftel accept both connection types and if so is one better then the other.

In my setup instructions from Swiftel it says to use PPPoE and PAP authentication (which is working fine by the way) but I have read in other threads and on Swiftels web site that you should use PPPoA and CHAP authentication.

If anyone could help me understand it I'd really appreciate it.

Both are acceptable. If PPPoE works fine for you, no need to change it. We have found that PPPoA, in some cases, fixes problems with MTU, accessing some sites and authentication.

I'm confused.

If Swiftel provide a static IP address, why do we need to choose?

When I select static IP in my router, there are NO PPPoX options.

The option to set pppoa or pppoe should be somewhere else then.

A dynamic or static IP does not really have anything to do with the protocol youre using.... well, unless your bridging to the ISP (i think?).

Selecting static IP in you router probably switches it to bridged ethernet mode ... which is not what you want.

Select Dynamic IP, select PPPoA (NULL or LLC modes are fine), select CHAP authentication, select D.GMT modulation .... then it should work fine. Swiftel will provide you with the same IP every time you connect, and your router won't care that it really ins't a dynamic IP :)

My Router only has these options:

PPPOE
VPPPOE
Ethernet(br1483)
PPP
IPOA(rt1483)

Is PPPOE the best to use?

Also, the router (Open 501R) is not getting an IP address even though set to Dynamic IP. Can I find out what IP to use?
Network setup:
Router --- Firewall(BSD) ---- switch ----- 5 x WinXP PC.

Thanks for any advice.
